¡Qué isla más bonita!
What a beautiful island! You will accompany CLC Spanish Instructor Tracey Kloeckl-Jiménez and CLC Environmental Studies Instructor Jason Edens, to study at the renowned Institute of Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) in beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico. We will explore the historical Old San Juan, hike through the Yunque Rainforest to the Charco Frio, experience the music and dance of Puerto Rico’s African heritage at Loiza, sample delicacies at the fritura stands, visit the incredibly beautiful beaches of Luquillo and Piñones, explore the botanical garden of Río Piedras, enjoy delicious and healthy yucca and plantains in a variety of dishes, experience the thrill of kayaking through mango groves to the Laguna Grande at night to see bioluminescent plankton, and experience cooking and salsa dance lessons. We will stay at a beautifully spacious, affordable and secure nunnery (with Wi-Fi!) and enjoy typical Puerto Rican dishes.
TWO WAYS TO PARTICIPATE
There are two ways to participate in this travel opportunity:
1) as a credit-earning student or
2) as a "community participant".
Space is limited and preference given to those who will sign-up for the 2-credit travel study course in our CLC Global Studies Department. The course is offered 2023 spring semester as GLST 1491: Global Studies Travel/Study Abroad~Puerto Rico.
1) Credit-bearing students:
Sign-up for GLST 1491 through the regular CLC registration process. The course will cover the following areas: Spanish language, Puerto Rican culture, Sustainable Living and International Travel. Students should expect learning in all four areas of this global studies course. Credit-bearing students will be expected to pay for the two credits, the associated school fees with taking credits and the cost of the travel package. Although the travel package is not eligible for financial aid, the 2 credits are part of the student's load and are therefore eligible for financial aid to those who qualify. PSEO students who register for the class GLST 1491 are responsible for the cost of the trip, which will be optional to the course. See information below regarding the cost of trip.
2) Community Participants:
There are also a few community participant slots available which do not require one to sign-up for the 2 credit course through CLC. However, there is a $200/credit ($400 total) community member fee on top of the travel package to help defray the cost of CLC instruction. These spots are limited and will fill fast. Contact one of the instructors for more information.
Credit-bearing students and community participants:
We will meet for three class sessions before the travel portion of the course and once a couple of weeks after the trip to debrief/ share photos and impressions.
The Monday evening (5:30 - 6:45 p.m.) meeting dates are to held on the Brainerd campus E362 (and virtually via Zoom) on the following dates:
pre-trip meetings on 1/30, 2/13 and 2/27

Please let me know if you'd like to participate via our web conferencing system on those evenings . The information on how to participate via ZOOM will be available on our D2L Brightspace course page: https://minnstate.zoom.us/j/98095040660
